Ever looked at the “Ingredients” section of your product labels? Most of it is indecipherable; it may as well be Hieroglyphics. Sometimes, you will see an ingredient you might recognize, like “water,” “alcohol,” or “Aloe.” But, these are only a few of the many words you note on that label.
With all these anti-aging trends basically everywhere in sight, as I turned 27, 28… 30, I couldn’t help but start checking on my face more often. I noticed that all my years of care-free sun play like surfing, running, sailing, tanning etc. seemed to be showing itself slightly. I decided to take matters into my own hands. I literally spent and still do spend sometimes up to hours online researching ingredients, their properties and their purposes. SO many are basically useless fillers, diluting the goods.
A product that sells itself as a Vitamin E rich potion might have Tocopheryl Acetate as the twelfth ingredient. What is Tocopheryl Acetate you ask. It is the miraculous Vitamin E that heals our skin so beautifully. So, if this Vitamin E is such a diamond ingredient in so many products, why not go straight to the source?
I resolved to stick to the jewels and weed out the chemicals, gums and goos that don’t mean a thing to my skin.
The ingredients that are sold inside these anti-aging potions are in fact precious to skin, however many of these are easy to find in a cheaper and in a purer, more saturated state.
Ingredients that Fix my Skin: Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Butyrosperum Parkii (Shea Butter), Sea Salt (minerals from the Sea), Persea Gratissima (Avocado oil), Cera Alba (Beeswax), Citrus aurantium dulcis (Orange fruit extract), Prunis dulcis (Almond oil), Aloe Vera, Retinol (Vitamin A based) and more.
Where to Find these Ingredients in a purer (and cheaper!) state:
- Pure Vitamin E Oil. sold in drugstores typically on the bottom shelf (near the ground so you probably haven’t noticed it) in the face cream section.
- Avocado Oil and Avocados. found in health food stores and many grocery stores (great deals are online).
- An Aloe Vera plant! Easy to care for, heals skin like magic simply from snipping a chunk of it and wiping the wet side on the wounded or dry area.
- Milk. Full of alpha-hydroxy and antioxidants. Its for wrinkles and acne, sloughing off dead skin cells and clearing pores. These traits make it fantastic for on the spot acne treatment too.
- Oranges. For the antioxidant Vitamin C.
- Turbinado (natural brown sugar). Fabulous for exfoliating, especially when used with any of the oils in this list.
- Mango. For wrinkle fighting Vitamin A.
- Coconut Oil. Sold in grocery stores.
- Lemon juice. For its Vitamin C and skin tone benefits.
- Grape seed oil. I’ve seen this even sold in its pure form at a local pharmacy in the body lotion/wash area.
- Uncooked Oatmeal. Mixed with your warm water bath, this stuff soothes irritated skin.
