Skin maintenance in your twenties can seem pretty easy. After all, you don’t have to worry about wrinkles or any other aging problems, right?

Wrong. The fact of the matter is, the better you take care of your skin now, the better it will look in the future. Not to mention all those hormonal breakouts women in their twenties experience can be a total bummer. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Here are a few skincare essentials to help your skin look great both today and in the years to come.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

You’ve probably noticed that your face is less oily than it was when you were a teenager. Or, like the women who have clear skin in high school and welcome their twenties with breakouts galore, your skin is just now producing excess oil. If you suffer from dryness, it’s time to supplement your dry skin with a high-quality moisturizer. By doing so, you can help to prevent the development of wrinkles and will maintain a more vibrant appearance. Test a few products in order to find one that works best for you, not too oily.  Then use it twice a day, once in the morning and once at night.

The right ingredients

It may be a little too early to start looking for anti-aging products since they can have too many active ingredients for your young skin. However, you’ll want to look for lactic, glycolic, and salicylic acids for your skin. These help to prevent acne without being overly harsh. This will ensure that you don’t have pesky blemishes popping up, and will minimize scars from pimple popping.

Eye cream

The skin around your eyes tends to be the thinnest on your body, so it’s critical to take care of it. Doing so will help you to avoid getting crow’s feet, dark circles, and puffiness. You may not have any signs of these yet but trust me, if you don’t start caring for these sensitive areas now,  you will begin to see them in your late twenties. Invest in an eye cream that will restore moisture to the area around your eyes and apply it each night. Make sure you wear sunglasses, too and always wear SPF.

Sunscreen

Speaking of which… now’s a good time to start becoming BFF’s with sunscreen. Forget the days when you used to run around on the beach without it. Sun damage isn’t always visible right after it happens, but you can be sure that it shows up years later. You’ll be protecting your skin and you’ll also be preventing skin cancer. This will help reduce uneven pigment and sun spots later in life. So for cosmetic reasons as well as health reasons, invest in a strong SPF for your face and thank us later.

Makeup remover

Do you ever feel so tired after a night out that removing all your makeup is too much trouble? Do it anyway. Seriously. Your skin repairs itself as you sleep, so it’s important to wash all the makeup and grime off your face every night so your skin can do its job. A gentle makeup remover is recommended that cleans and hydrates.

Use an exfoliator

Exfoliating is one of the most important steps in your face routine. It removes dead skin cells and keeps your face nice and smooth. You don’t need to do it every day, though. Just twice a week works best. Choose a product that is enjoyable to use. One of my favorites is a refreshing orange sugar scrub. You’ll look forward to your exfoliation days!

Watching what you eat and drink

Skincare doesn’t just end with moisturizer and sunscreen. What you put in your body is important, too. Because the health of your skin and your diet are so linked, you’ll have gorgeous skin when you start eating and drinking healthily. Instead of reaching for the chips, grab some veggies. And instead of drinking coffee in the afternoon, try drinking a green juice. Your skin will thank you.

Taking care of your skin doesn’t need to be rocket science, but it’s something you need to start thinking about. After all, young skin isn’t going to last forever. Your older self will definitely thank you!
